Numerous Twitter accounts are losing their avatars on September 3, including musician Keith Urban and news agencies The Hill and Now This is News.
The list also includes Craig Kanalley, the current social media manager of the Buffalo Sabres and the former Huffington Post social media manager, and MG Seigler, a partner at Google Ventures and columnist at Tech Crunch.
“I’m told my avatar is an egg,” said Seigler. “No idea why.”
The phenomenon appears to have started in the last hour. Some accounts are already fixed, such as Keith Urban’s.
In normal circumstances, when a Twitter account is first created, the egg is the default avatar. But it’s associated with spam accounts and many people change it quickly.
