Twitter celebrated its fifth birthday on Monday, March 21, five years after Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey sent the very first tweet: “Just setting up my twttr.”

“5yrs ago, I had a few big tasks ahead. 1: deploy to production. 2: get SMS send working. 3: invite coworkers,” Dorsey tweeted on Monday morning.

Shortly after he made his first tweet on March 21, 2006, his second was “Inviting coworkers.”

After half a decade, Twitter has become part of the fabric of society for the tens of millions of regular users and a real-time information source for events from the Oscars and Olympics to mass protests and elections.

The more than 200 million registered users post about 140 million tweets—short messages that are 140 characters or less in length—per day, according to Twitter’s latest tally.

“Happy Birthday @Twitter! Proud of everything our users & the team have created. It’s been an inspiring & humbling 5yrs. Okay, back to work,” Dorsey tweeted on Monday.

For the past 10 days, Dorsey has been digging through his archives to repost some of the original logos and first tweets he sent out. He also tweeted some e-mails and instant messages between him and his fellow co-founders, Biz Stone and Evan Williams.

Twitter’s revenue from advertisements is projected to reach $150 million by the end of 2011.
