Twitter’s anniversary was noted on Monday--marking the seventh year of its existence.

News about the popular social media site’s anniversary was relatively quiet until Twitter founder Jack Dorsey tweeted about it.

“Twttr launched publicly 7 years ago today with this article from,” he wrote, linking to a Gigaom article about it.

Dorsey created the website and service in March 2006 and by July of that year, it was launched to the public.

At least half a billion people are registered on the website and an average of 400 million messages are posted per day, reported Silicon Republic.

It means that 9,100 tweets are sent every second, as CorpComms magazine notes.
