Turkish police pulled over drivers who were racing in the Turkish Rally Championship, asking the stunned competitors for their licenses and registration.
The race took place in Marmara, the northwestern region of Turkey, in Kocaeli Province, and at one point, drove through urban areas, reported the Hurriyet Daily News, citing local media.
Kocaeli residents complained of noise and apparently did not know a rally was taking place, thinking that the drivers were taking part in an illegal race.
Police were called in, and they tracked down the drivers and told them they would hand out tickets for speeding. They told the drivers to drive slowly through residential areas.
After racing organizers spoke with local officials, the race was then restarted and the cars were called back to the starting location.
But before police were called in, as Kocaeli Motorists’ Association Chairman Ceyhun Yilmaz told local media, they had all the required permits issued by the government “down to all lower levels, but that the police had stopped the cars after complaints about the noise.”
