The Tsarnaev Rolling Stone cover sparked huge criticism against the publication. The cover features Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev looking straight at the camera.
According to USA Today, the Rolling Stone story describes the 19-year-old Russian immigrant as a bright kid who had charisma but turned into a monster.
The report was compiled from interviews of childhood friends, teachers, law enforcement officials, and neighbors.
“The Bomber. How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam and became a monster,” reads the cover.
A number of people went on Twitter and Facebook and derided Rolling Stone’s decision to put the bombing suspect on the front page.
“I think it’s wrong to make celebrities out of these people,” one person wrote, according to ABC News. “Why give the guy the cover of Rolling Stone? TIME gave Charles Manson the cover and all the magazines carried pictures of the Columbine shooters on the covers, too. Don’t make martyrs out of these people.”
“Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs, should be on cover,” wrote another.
