Donald Trump, the president-elect, mentioned how many people would be immediately deported from the United States, describing his immigration stance on CBS News’ “60 Minutes.”
He said that approximately two to three million undocumented immigrants could be deported in a short time after he’s sworn into office.
Trump said these undocumented immigrants who will be deported have criminal records.
“What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million—it could be even three million—we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate,” Trump said. “But we’re getting them out of our country, they’re here illegally.”
The “60 Minutes” interview airs on Sunday night.
Then, after securing the border, Trump said his administration would make a move on the remaining undocumented immigrants in the United States.
“After the border is secure and after everything gets normalized, we’re going to make a determination on the people that they’re talking about, who are terrific people. They’re terrific people, but we are gonna make a determination at that,” Trump added. “But before we make that determination ... it’s very important—we are going to secure our border.”
In the interview, he also described the border wall on the U.S.-Mexico border he’s consistently spoke about during his campaign.
When asked if he would accept a fence, he answered, “For certain areas I would, but certain areas ... a wall is more appropriate. I’m very good at this, it’s called construction.”
Trump will be sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2017.
