Donald Trump emphasizes his support for religion in new interview, less than two weeks before the start of the Iowa caucuses, where many Republican primary voters are staunch social conservatives.

Trump said that Christianity is “under siege,” pointing to the massacre of Christians in Syria as an example, and that Christians needed to “band together.”

“We’re not banded together properly,” Trump said in an interview with the Christian Broadcasting Network on Jan. 19. “We have to stick together whether it’s very, very serious things like what’s happening over in the Middle East or things such as ‘Merry Christmas.’”

Trump made similar statements the day before at a campaign rally at Liberty University, known primarily for being a bastion of evangelicalism.

“We’re going to protect Christianity, and I can say that. I don’t have to be politically correct. We’re going to protect it,” Trump said at the rally.

Trump is head to head with Texas Senator Ted Cruz in the latest polls in Iowa, and has a commanding lead in New Hampshire, the other key early state in the primaries.
