President Donald Trump has called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end the probe into alleged Russian collusion led by special counsel Robert Mueller.

“This is a terrible situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further. Bob Mueller is totally conflicted, and his 17 Angry Democrats that are doing his dirty work are a disgrace to USA!” he tweeted on Aug. 1

It comes after former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort went on trial for alleged tax, bank, and financial fraud. On Wednesday, the president distanced himself from his former campaign chief, saying that he worked for him “for a very short time.”

“Paul Manafort worked for Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole and many other highly prominent and respected political leaders. He worked for me for a very short time. Why didn’t government tell me that he was under investigation. These old charges have nothing to do with Collusion - a Hoax!” Trump wrote.
Sessions, a former U.S. senator from Alabama, supported Trump during his campaign. After Trump appointed him, Sessions recused himself from the Russia investigation in March 2017 before Mueller was appointed as special counsel.

Robert Mueller reports directly to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

In June, Trump criticized Sessions for his recusal. “I would have quickly picked someone else. So much time and money wasted, so many lives ruined...and Sessions knew better than most that there was No Collusion,” he wrote at the time.
