A new tropical depression, named Five-E, formed south of Mexico on Thursday morning, said the U.S. National Hurricane Center. The agency said it might become Tropical Storm Erick by later tonight.
The depression is located some 260 miles south-southeast of Acapulco, Mexico, the agency said.
The storm is moving forward to the northeast at around 10 miles per hour and the general motion is expected to continue for the next day.
The maximum sustained winds as of Thursday were around 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.
The depression is expected to turn into a tropical storm on Thursday night or Friday, the Hurricane Center said.
The Weather Channel’s Shawn Reynolds pointed out on Twitter that if the storm is named, it will be Tropical Storm Erick.
