MARIETTA, Ga.—A state trooper and a suspect were shot Wednesday afternoon in a police chase in suburban Atlanta, the Georgia State Patrol said.

The GSP said in an email that the trooper and suspect were shot in a pursuit on Interstate 75 in Marietta.

They were both taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Their conditions were unknown, but the trooper was conscious, according Jen Talaber, a spokeswoman for Gov. Nathan Deal. The names of the two have not been released.

Marietta Police spokeswoman Brittany Wallace said the shooting caused all but two lanes of the busy highway to be shut down.

WSB-TV showed cars at a standstill for about a mile as several police cars and an ambulance were parked at the scene. Police diverted traffic off I-75 heading south to clear the way for the investigation.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said it will continue to investigate the shooting.
