In the trailer, an alternate version of the Apollo 11 moon landing is depicted, complete with old footage of Walter Cronkite. But it diverges from history when astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong discover a wreckage and what appears to be a dead transformer.

Speculation on the Internet following the release of the trailer has lead many to believe that the robot, whose eyes flicker on and off at the end, is Alpha Trion.

“The giveaway is that mechanized fu Manchu. In pre-movie franchise mythology, Alpha Trion is one of the 13 original Transformers created by the god Primus,” writes MTV.

The movie will get more into the background and mythology surrounding the Transformers series.

“We are going to continue to explore the past in the third one and that will continue to inform the present,” producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told MTV News.

The film, directed by Michael Bay, is slated for release on July 1, 2011.

Shia LeBouf will still play the role of Sam Witwicky and Megan Fox’s role will be replaced by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who will play Sam’s love interest Carly.
