NEW YORK—The 2009 American International Toy Fair closed on Wednesday at the Jacob Javits Center with exhibitors donating five truckloads of toys to be given to kids in need.

The Toy Industry Foundation (TIF) in partnership with Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc. (K.I.D.S) was at the American International Toy Fair to host their sixth annual toy drive to benefit children in need. More than 230 exhibitors contributed products valued at over $250,000 to The Toy Bank, the Toy Industry Foundation’s signature program.

Donated toys and educational products will be distributed through K.I.D.S. to community agencies nationwide, such as The NY Foundling, which runs education and support programs for children in the New York area.

“In these troubling economic times, now more than ever, children need the chance to play” said Jean Butler, Executive Director of the Toy Industry Foundation. “Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the Toy Fair 2009 exhibitors, we are thrilled to be able to bring joy and comfort to deserving children who are ill, live in poverty or are victims of abuse or neglect.”

With the help of nearly 80 volunteers, K.I.D.S. and TIF representatives collected five large truckloads of toys from New York City’s Jacob Javits Center at the close of the four-day trade show.

“What sets K.I.D.S. apart from many other organizations fighting poverty is that we find new, name brand products to distribute through our network of 1,000 community based agencies nationwide,” said K.I.D.S. President Janice Weinman.

“This year’s donations from the American International Toy Fair will not only benefit children from The Foundling’s programs here in New York, but will also reach many others throughout the United States.”

The Foundling will receive part of the donated toys for use in their various family support and child development programs. The remainder will be distributed through K.I.D.S. and TIF’s Toy Bank to deserving children around the country.

For 140 years The Foundling has been helping children and families in crisis,” said Bill Baccaglini, The Foundling’s Executive Director. “During times like these, we see an increase in the demand for our services and programs, so the generosity of organizations like K.I.D.S. and the Toy Industry Foundation is more critical than ever. This partnership will help us to ensure that the children in our care feel safe, secure and loved.”
