A female British tourist on Tuesday jumped out of a third-floor window in India to escape an apparent sexual assault, it was reported.
The woman said she was fearful that the owner of the New Delhi hotel where she was saying was going to attack her, reported The Associated Press, citing police officer Sushant Gaur.
The Daily Mail reported that she broke her leg in the fall.
The owner of the hotel denied the woman’s claims and told authorities he knocked on the woman’s door because she asked him to wake her up at 4 a.m. According to the Mail, he was arrested.
But the woman said that he forced his way in and allegedly made improper advances.
“Our consular team has spoken to this lady and also to the local police,” a spokesperson with the British High Commission in New Delhi told AP. She is being offered consular assistance currently, the office said.
The woman, whose name was not released, is believed to be a dentist, according to the Mail.
The U.K. Foreign Office recently said that women traveling in India “should use caution.”
“'Reported cases of sexual assault against women and young girls are increasing; recent sexual attacks against female visitors in tourist areas and cities show that foreign women are also at risk,” it added.
There have been increasing concerns over sexual violence in India, following the rape of a woman on a bus in New Delhi in December.
The incident triggered mass protests for the government to do a better job in preventing such attacks.
