Indian police said that an American tourist was gang-raped in India at a hill resort, according to reports.
The female tourist was picked up by three men in a truck on Monday while she was hitch-hiking to her guest house in Manali in Himachal Pradesh state, reported Reuters.
“The 30-year-old was raped by men in a truck on Monday night. They offered her a lift and she accepted it,” police inspector Abhimanyu Kumar told the the AFP news agency.
The woman claimed the men took her to an isolated area and raped her.
“We are in contact with authorities but due to issues of privacy we have no further comment,” Peter Vrooman, a spokesman for the U.S. embassy in New Delhi, told the news agency.
Three men were arrested in connection with the assault.
The incident comes several months after a Swiss tourist was gang-raped while she was on a cycling trip through the country, reported The Associated Press. And a British woman jumped out of her hotel room because she feared being attacked by the hotel’s owner, who reportedly tried to force his way into her room.
