NEW YORK—Historical and cultural sites throughout New York state are being featured on a road map that was unveiled by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo Tuesday.

Part of the initiative to bolster heritage tourism are signs that will be placed on the state thruway to direct people to sites, such as the home of Washington Irving, who published “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in 1820 (Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, Tarrytown); a landmark in the town of former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s birth (Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, Hyde Park); and the site where the Revolutionary War ended and Washington disbanded the Army in 1783 (New Windsor Cantonment, Vails Gate, N.Y.).

“The Path Through History will highlight the rich history that exists in New York state by showcasing more than 200 of our most significant sites and historic milestones,” Cuomo said in a release. “From Mark Twain writing ‘Huckleberry Finn’ in Elmira to John Coltrane’s one-of-a-kind jazz being played on Long Island; we have done and seen it all in New York and now we are putting our state’s heritage on display for the world to enjoy.”

The state will give a total of $1 million to help regions develop heritage tourism plans in line with the road map.

Heritage tourism has a $5 billion impact on the state’s economy each year, according to the release. The governor’s office is also working on a new website that will help promote the sites.
