A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the metropolitan Toronto area on Monday evening, amid social media reports that some roads and areas have flooded. Some residents have also lost power.
UPDATE: Around 300,000 people are without power and the GO train is flooded.
Citing Environment Canada, The Toronto Star reported that power outages were reported across the city. Currently the thunderstorms are over the Mississauga and Brampton regions.
Some 6,000 people were without power, Toronto Hydro was quoted as saying.
Broadcaster CBC also reported that flooding, transit delays, and power outages were frequent.
Environment Canada said it placed Toronto under a severe thunderstorm warning due to a storm “cluster.”
The Scarborough Rapid Transit Line and most street cars are still operating.
Toronto Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong told the Globe and Mail that numerous lights and street lights were out.
“Various freeways and sections of the Lakeshore are severely flooded,” he said.
Between 1.1 inches and 1.5 inches of rain had fallen in Toronto by 6:15 p.m.
On Twitter, users talked about the flooding.
“No power in north Toronto. This is barbaric. I’ve only got LTE Internet,” wrote one user. Another tweeted: “How lovely. Been stuck in Toronto for about an hour and a half waiting for a bus to show up.”
