With 1,200 members, the Bixi Toronto Bike System is now ready to roll out the rims in downtown Toronto this spring.

The BIXI bike sharing system of 1,000 black bikes, which relies on public and private funding, was approved last May and is set to launch May 3.

The $95 per year memberships allow users to pick up a bike for a one-way trip of less than 30 minutes and drop the bike off at any of 80 BIXI stations. Trips longer than 30 minutes will incur additional fees.

The service is already running in Montreal and is set to open in Ottawa this spring. The BIXI system, which is said to complement other public transportation, also runs in Melbourne, Washington D.C., and London.
