TORONTO—The Toronto Police Service is cutting costs, and it’s starting from the top.

An internal memo circulated last Friday is offering early retirement to high-ranking officers and civilian managers, according to the Globe and Mail. These officers and managers, originally set to retire next year, will not be replaced.

The Globe says the Toronto Police Services Board is hoping to cut 18 people—12 officers and 6 civilians—who rank from inspectors to staff superintendents. The reduction will save the TPS $2.8 million per year.

TPS spokesman Mark Pugash told The Epoch Times he could not confirm the contents of the leaked memo.

However, he said the TPS was under pressure from the city to reduce spending, which resulted in this buyout.

Pugash said it was the TPS’s priority to maintain the strength of the front line, which is why they were trimming from the top.

He also said that Police Chief William Blair will do “everything in his power” to ensure budget cuts do not undermine public safety.

The reductions will not end here. Pugash said that other cuts will take place, although nothing specific could be named yet.
