A tornado hit south Florida late Tuesday, carving a mile-long trail of destruction, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Only a few minor injuries consisting of cuts and bruises were reported, the agency said.

A tornado with winds of 120 mph touched down and remained on the ground for more than a mile in the towns of Sunrise and Plantation, both near Fort Lauderdale and the Atlantic coast, according to a NWS release.

“Up to 50 homes were damaged along the tornado’s path with damage to roofs, garage doors, and windows,” the Miami-based agency said. It adds that in Sunrise, at least a dozen homes were severely damaged and “two trailer homes were shifted off their foundations with most of the walls collapsed.”

The tornado was part of a larger severe weather system that hit Florida on Tuesday night, bringing heavy rain and lightning.

The Weather Service said it removed the tornado watch for Broward County because the weather system has mostly passed. At the same time, however, the agency issued storm watches for South Carolina.
