Top 25 Roundup: Texas Tech Stuns No. 13 Tennessee in OT

High-powered offense was not part of the game plan for either team Tuesday night when Texas Tech and 13th-ranked Tennessee squared off in the opening game of the Jimmy V Classic in New York.

The result was a bloody-knuckle battle, especially in the second half when scoring was a struggle on both ends of the court, and it took extra time to settle the outcome.

Texas Tech pulled off the upset, 57–52 in overtime, despite shooting 31.1 percent (19-for-61) from the floor and 4-for-24 (16.7 percent) from 3-point range. The Volunteers were worse in both categories—19-for-71 (26.8 percent) and 6-for-40 (15 percent) from outside the arc.

Terrence Shannon Jr. led Texas Tech (7–1) with 18 points, while Kevin Obanor and Davion Warren added 10 each. John Fulkerson paced Tennessee (6–2) with 10.

No. 6 Villanova 67, Syracuse 53

Justin Moore scored 18 points and Collin Gillespie added 14 as the Wildcats defeated the Orange in the Jimmy V Classic in New York City.

Jermaine Samuels contributed 13 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats (7–2), who took a program-record 50 shots from beyond the 3-point arc but hit just 13. Caleb Daniels chipped in with 11 points for Villanova, which won its fourth in a row.

Jimmy Boeheim led the Orange (5–4) with 21 points while Joseph Girard III added 11. Buddy Boeheim was held to six points on 3-of-15 shooting. Cole Swider, a former Villanova standout, swept 12 rebounds and Jesse Edwards blocked three shots.

No. 8 Kansas 78, UTEP 52

Ochai Agbaji scored 23 points and Christian Braun added 20 as the Jayhawks cruised past the Miners in Kansas City, Mo.

The Jayhawks (7–1) raced to a 10–0 lead and never looked back, holding the Miners (4–4) to 31.1 percent shooting.

UTEP’s leading scorer Souley Boum, netted 18 points but went just 5 of 19 from the field, including 2 of 10 from 3-point range.

No. 10 Kentucky 76, Southern 64

Oscar Tshiebwe scored 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting and collected 11 rebounds and a season-best four blocks to lead the Wildcats to a victory over the visiting Jaguars in a Unity Series matchup in Lexington, Ky.

TyTy Washington Jr. added 14 points for the Wildcats (7–1), who won their seventh straight game. The game was the first of Kentucky’s five-year agreement with the Southwestern Athletic Conference to play a game each season against a historically black college.

Jayden Saddler recorded 18 points and six assists, Brion Whitley added 14 points and Tyrone Lyons had 12 for Southern (3–6). The Jaguars shot 41.4 percent from the field and were 5-for-13 from 3-point range.

No. 12 Arkansas 86, Charlotte 66

JD Notae poured in 23 points to go with 10 rebounds as the Razorbacks turned back the visiting 49ers in Fayetteville, Ark.

Davonte Davis supplied 18 points and eight assists, Jaylin Williams added 15 points and eight rebounds and Chris Lykes posted 13 points off the bench as the Razorbacks (9–0) wrapped up a four-game homestand.

Austin Butler’s 14 points and six rebounds and Jahmir Young’s 10 points paced Charlotte (4–4). Jared Garcia and Aly Khalifa each had nine points.

No. 16 USC 80, Eastern Kentucky 68

Junior forward Isaiah Mobley shot 5 of 6 from 3-point range en route to a career-high 23 points as the Trojans cruised past the Colonels in Los Angeles.

Mobley grabbed 13 rebounds, leading USC (9–0) to a 46–32 rebounding advantage. The Trojans outscored Eastern Kentucky in the paint 44–18. Chevez Goodwin shot 6-of-6 from the floor for 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while Drew Peterson added 15 points and six boards. Max Agbonkpolo chipped in 12 points, putting four of USC’s five starters in double figures.

Eastern Kentucky (5–5) made just 32.4 percent of its attempts from the floor on the way to its fourth consecutive loss. Braxton Beverly led the Colonels with 16 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
