Tom Coburn, the Republican Senator from Oklahoma, said that President Obama is getting “close” to the standard for impeachment.
Coburn, who was speaking at a convention in Muskogee, said that Obama is “getting perilously close” to the constitutional standard for impeachment, reported the Tulsa World.
“I used to have a great fear of constitutional conventions,” Coburn said. “I have a great fear now of not having one.”
According to Politico.com, Michigan Rep. Kerry Bentivolio said that it would be a “dream come true” to submit a bill to impeach Obama. Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Texas Republican, started the impeachment debate, saying the House had enough votes ready.
“I think there’s some intended violation of the law in this administration, but I also think there’s a ton of incompetence, of people who are making decisions,” Coburn said, according to BuzzFeed.
“Those are serious things, but we’re in a serious time,” Coburn added. “I don’t have the legal background to know if that rises to high crimes and misdemeanor, but I think they’re getting perilously close.”
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele slammed Farenthold for his comments about impeachment, saying they “have no basis in fact and no grounding in reality,” according to BuzzFeed.
