Toll Booth Worker Killed in Massive SF Bay Bridge Crash

Driver of truck arrested on DUI, manslaughter charges

A major crash on San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge killed a toll booth worker, according to reports over the weekend.

A rented box truck smashed into a booth Saturday, according to the California governor’s office.

Gov. Jerry Brown confirmed the lone victim was 46-year-old California Department of Transportation employee Si Si Han, who worked for Caltrans for more than a decade.

“Anne and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Caltrans Toll Collector Si Si Han, who died today while serving the traveling public. On behalf of all Californians, we extend our condolences to her family, co-workers, and friends,” Brown said in a statement.

Han is survived by her husband, Ryan, and their 10-year-old daughter, Ashly, Brown’s office stated. Capitol flags were flown half-staff in honor of Han.

KCRA-TV reported that the driver of the rental truck, as well as another occupant, were badly hurt when it struck five cars before hitting the toll booth at around 5:11 a.m.

CHP Officer Vu Williams said that officials don’t believe the truck, which was filled with sound or lighting equipment, intentionally hit the booth but the cause of the crash is under investigation, according to KCRA. The people inside the five cars were moderately injured in the crash.

“We’re investigating exactly why the driver lost control and struck the toll plaza, so we’ve got to determine all the factors involved, including impairments, medical issues or mechanical issues,” Williams said.

“I’ve never seen this,” Williams added. “I’ve seen them damage the booth before. Never to this extent.”

Daniel Berk, 32, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, ABC7 reported.
