On a recent trip to Aurich Germany, I came across some traditional German farmhouses. These houses are unique to other farmhouses because they are constructed as large structures that have a main section where the family lives, and a smaller attached section for animals. This allows the farmer to tend to the animals without having to go outside and brave the elements! They’re also made entirely of brick, with dramatic slanted roofs.
We particularly love the green doors. To mimic this look in your home’s exterior (bonus if you happen to have a brick house!) go with a kelly-green paint (like Mythic’s Kiss of Spring) and apply to a wood door. If you want to achieve a great rustic look, use sandpaper to distress and remove some of the color.
Traditional american farmhouses, on the other hand, are quite the opposite! Most are designed to appear crisp and clean with lots of windows and porches. They also lack the attached portion for the animals. Like German farmhouses, though, they are very simple and minimalistic in their design - their primary purpose is function, not necessarily style.
If you’re looking to renovate, a big wraparound porch is a great way to give your home a farmhouse-feel! A crisp white coat of paint for the exterior with a colored door (like the blue one above) is a great option as well.
