Khalsa continued their fine run with top level performances last Sunday Nov 11 to win the Guru Nanak 9-a-side field hockey tournament, retaining their title from last year and making it three wins in a row.
Khalsa-A topped Pool-A then beat KCC-A 4-0 in the Quarter Final. They went on to overcome Punjab-A on penalty shoot-out in the Semi-final and beat an improving Singh Sabha team 2-0 in the Final. Ahmed Ewis scored from the penalty spot to put Khalsa one goal up and a further goal was added in the second time period of seven-and-a-half minutes.
Gurcharan Singh, tournament organiser and Chairman of the Khalsa Sports Club, commented on the event, which has been held annually since 1969.
“This is the biggest turnout ever for this tournament. We have 20 teams participating this year and it’s getting [to be] a more and more exciting event,” said Singh. “Khalsa Diwan is putting a lot of effort into promoting this hockey in Hong Kong.”
He was very pleased with Khalsa’s performance.
“We prepared for this tournament very, very well and we wanted to make it three wins in a row because we have won it for the last two years – making it a hat-trick and to make history for the club. It’s good for the club and the players,” he said.
“The players have really done their job well. They put in all their efforts to conquer this tournament,” said Singh, who considered the Khalsa goalie Arvinder “Bundu” Singh to be player of the tournament for making such great saves, both in the general play and in the penalty shoot outs. “This helped Khalsa greatly to achieve the good result.”
The Khalsa-B side topped off their weekend by winning the Plate Competition, showing strength in depth in the Khalsa camp.
Other Results
There were no men’s Hong Kong Hockey Association Premier League matches planned last week due to the Guru Nanak Tournament. Meanwhile, the two women’s matches were postponed due to Hong Kong national squad training.
