BRISBANE, Australia—Three generations of women from one family came to see Shen Yun Performing Arts at the matinee session at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane, on Feb. 2.
Ms. Fran Stevenson, an accountant, brought along her daughter and her mother, because they all have something in common—an appreciation of dance.
“I used to dance a long time ago and I really love dancing. My daughter is a dancer and we wanted to do something special for my mum who is here today with us as well and we thought we would take her” said Ms. Stevenson.
Ms. Stevenson took particular notice of how skilled and disciplined the Shen Yun dancers were on stage. The Shen Yun website states that “Chinese dance is known for its incredible flips and spins, and its gentle elegance—also one of the most rigorous and expressive art forms in the world.”
“The dancers were just amazing … such discipline” she said.
New York based Shen Yun features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers who perform dressed in stunning costumes amidst breathtaking backdrops which are digitally animated. Ms. Stevenson was taken by the sheer colour saturation of the stage and the performers.
“The costumes were beautiful … the colour—you just don’t see colour like that. I really like the special effects with the screen as well. I just couldn’t believe it, it was really amazing, I have never seen that done before, quite spectacular.”
The dance ‘An Unexpected Encounter’ portrays a father and daughter who are persecuted in China after taking photos of Falun Dafa practitioners holding a banner reading Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance. Like many other spiritual disciplines, Falun Dafa is currently banned in China.
Ms. Stevenson realised that the dance An Unexpected Encounter would not be permitted to be shown within China at this time—only in a democratic country such as Australia.
“It is a very peaceful way of actually saying: ‘Did you know this was happening?'” she said.
Ms. Stevenson said that she would recommend Shen Yun to her friends and family because “it was so spectacular”.
“Definitely go and see it, and be prepared to. It’s just so visually spectacular and riveting the whole way through,” she said.
