The Maze Runner will get a prequel, confirmed writer James Dashner.

The popular book spawned three others that explored a world where a deadly virus wiped out much of the human population, with a group trying to find a cure but turning to sinister means.

Now The Maze Runner will get a prequel which further explores the creation of the Maze and how the Gladers got there.

The book has a release date in 2016, though a specific date hasn’t been announced.

“From the very beginning, I’ve always wanted to write a prequel about Thomas, Teresa, Newt, Minho, Alby and all the Gladers that leads up to the very moment Thomas enters the Box,” Dashner said in an announcement obtained early by MTV.

“There are so many things hinted at that will be fun to reveal in depth. For years, fans have made it abundantly and enthusiastically clear that they want the same thing, so now seems like the perfect time to give readers the story of how the Maze began.”

The series has sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide so far.

And The Maze Runner became more popular when the movie based on the book hit theaters recently.

A sequel based on the second book in the series is already planned for a 2015 release.
