Ellen DeGeneres Named New ‘Idol’ Judge

It was announced on Wednesday that the fourth judge on “American Idol,” replacing Paula Abdul, will be comedian and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. DeGeneres posted this message on her show’s Web site, “Guess what? Go ahead ... nope ... keep guessing ... okay, I'll just tell you—I’m gonna be the new judge on “American Idol”! The show’s executive producer released a statement saying, “Beyond her incredible sense of humor and love of music, she brings with her an immense warmth and compassion that is almost palpable. She is one of America’s foremost entertainers, and we cannot wait to have her join our team.” The new season begins this January on Fox.

Kennedy Center Honorees Announced

Actor Robert De Niro, opera singer Grace Bumbry, composer Dave Brubek, musician Bruce Springsteen, and writer, director, actor, composer, and producer Mel Brooks will be honored in December at this year’s Kennedy Center Honors. The annual event celebrates the artistic careers and contributions of the greatest American talents. In addition to being honored at the 32nd Kennedy Center Honors Gala, honorees are also invited to a White House reception and State Department dinner. This 2009 Gala will be televised in prime time on Dec. 29 on CBS.

Mandy Moore’s New ‘Do’

Actress/singer Mandy Moore has been cast as the long-haired princess Rapunzel in the upcoming animated Disney picture inspired by the classic Grimm’s fairy tale. Moore will co-star with Zachary Levi, star of NBC’s “Chuck.” Also cast are David Schwimmer and Peter Sallis. “Rapunzel,” a digital 3-D film, is scheduled to be released at the end of 2010.

Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley to Adopt

Actress Katherine Heigl and her husband, musician Josh Kelley, are adopting a baby. The couple, who married in 2007, are adopting a special-needs child from Korea. Heigl discussed the baby on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” saying, “It is a little girl and she’ll be 10 months at the end of this month.” They plan to name her Naleigh.

Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig Co-Starring on Broadway

Tony Award winner Hugh Jackman and James Bond star Daniel Craig can be found for a limited time at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in the play “A Steady Rain.” The play by Keith Huff features the two as best friends and Chicago policemen who reflect on their experiences. “A Steady Rain” opens on Sept. 29 and runs through Dec. 6.
