Disney Studios Chairman Steps Down
Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook abruptly resigned from his post on Friday, leaving behind a company he was devoted to for just under 40 years. He began his Disney career in 1970—working as a monorail and steam train operator at Disneyland. In 2007, “Business Week” labeled him “the nicest guy in Disney’s jungle.” In a statement, Cook said, “I have loved every minute of my 38 years that I have worked at Disney.” No replacement has been named.
Television’s Best Awarded at Emmy’s
The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards were held on Sunday in Los Angeles. Actor Neil Patrick Harris hosted the show as many of the same winners from last year enjoyed a second round of Emmy success. “30 Rock” won again for outstanding comedy series and “Mad Men” was named the best drama series, as it was last year. Actors Alec Baldwin, Glenn Close and Bryan Cranston also enjoyed second consecutive Emmy nods. First-time Emmy winners included actors Toni Collette, Kristin Chenoweth, and Jon Cryer. It is estimated that over 13 million people—the most in 3 years—watched the awards ceremony. This is an impressive figure, considering the show was up against an important NFL game, the much talked about “Curb Your Enthusiasm” premiere, and a new episode of “Mad Men.”
‘Precious’ Wins Top Prize in Toronto
“Precious”—the drama produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, won the Cadillac People’s Choice Award for best film at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. The coveted award is often seen as a predictor of future Oscar success. “Precious,” directed by Lee Daniels and based on the novel, “Push” by Sapphire, chronicles the struggles of an abused teenager in Harlem. The picture stars Gabourey ‘Gabby’ Sidibe and also features singer Mariah Carey. “Precious” will open in select theaters in November.
Lucinda Williams Shares Wedding with Concert Audience
Singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams married her manager Tom Overby on stage in Minneapolis this Friday. The Grammy winner exchanged vows in front of family, friends, and fans according to NPR, during the first show of her “30th Anniversary” tour.
John Travolta to Testify
Actor John Travolta, who tragically lost his 16-year-old son earlier this year, is expected to testify in a related extortion case in the Bahamas. Jury selection is underway in the case against ambulance operator Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamian Senator Pleasant Bridgewater, who are accused of threatening to release a refusal-to-transport document, typically signed when emergency medical services are declined. The Travolta’s reportedly never consented to such an order. The defendants have pled, “not guilty.”
