The Following, nearing the end of season 2, has been renewed by Fox for a season 3.

The renewal was announced along with renewals of New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and The Mindy Project.

The renewal for season 3 was a bit of a surprise, reported Screen Rant, because the strong viewing numbers dropped from season 1 (nearly 8 million overall, 2.6 in the 18-49 demo) to season 2 (around 6 million overall, 2.1 in the 18-49).

However, the show does have a high DVR viewership, which likely played a big factor in the renewal.

Apparently star Kevin Bacon planned from the start for there to be three seasons.

“There’s a big picture here. Kevin’s been very vocal about this being a passion project for him; he’s gone through a lot of stages and evolution about how he’s going to tell the story… But I do know that when he first sat down, he knew how three seasons could play out — and he could build beyond that. He had a solid foundation when he started,” executive producer Marcos Siega told TV Line

Screen Rant is not impressed with the idea of a third season, though.

“Creatively, one wonders where The Following could possibly go in season 3. Most of Joe Carroll’s cult didn’t make it out of season 1, and even more have perished during season 2. Also, one would think Ryan Hardy is going to grow wary of falling for damaged blonde women eventually, and Agent Mike Weston will be lucky to escape from 2014 with his sanity intact.”

Season 2 is slated to air on Monday nights until May 3.
