FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—On opening night at the Broward Center for the Performing arts, Michael McClure, a pastor, and his wife, Cathy, a teacher, celebrated traditional Chinese culture as it was elegantly portrayed onstage by New-York based Shen Yun Performing Arts.
“That’s why we came, we were interested in Chinese culture,” said Mrs. McClure, who shared that she felt the performance was lovely and calm.
Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company graced the stage with colorful performances of classical Chinese dance and musical scores, which reflected on the virtues and wisdom of 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture.
“Very interesting, very educational,” said Mr. McClure, describing the performance. “I was interested to see the portrayal of the different historical periods and events and also the overall philosophy.”
Mrs. McClure said she thought Shen Yun performed very well in going through the histories. “It was just so well-portrayed.”
Shen Yun’s dances draw upon the stories, legends, and ancient myths that span China’s vast history. They also touch upon traditional Chinese values and maintain a veneration for the divine.
“It was very clear,” said Mr. McClure. “I thought it was very interesting how they portrayed the belief that they came from a creator and that they expect their creator to return.”
“The music was fantastic. The dancing was fantastic,” Mrs. McClure said.
“The music was beautiful, very well done,” Mr. McClure agreed.
There will be a Saturday matinee and evening performance, and also a Sunday matinee before Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company travels to Orlando, for performances, Jan. 15–17, at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre.
