A Texas school teacher has been placed on administrative leave after a video emerged of her beating a student. She was subsequently arrested.

Mary Hastings, 63, was taken to Jefferson County Jail on the charge of assault, and was released the same day on a $2,500 bond.

“The Beaumont Independent School District can confirm that an Ozen High School teacher was arrested today for physically assaulting a student,” district officials said in a statement, ABC News reports.

The video shows Hastings hitting the student repeatedly for a few seconds, saying “Because you’re stopping him from graduating, you idiot [expletive].”

In response to the beating, the rest of the class bursts out in laughter.

It was Hastings’s third year teaching at the district, according to Local 8.

“The District is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for our students. BISD does not condone employees abusing any child and will not tolerate such conduct,” the district stated.
