An explosive device that detonated inside a home in Texas on Friday, killing a man, was inside of a package, police say.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is working to reconstruct the device to learn more about how it worked and who may have created it.
“Right now, we’re trying to determine how did the package get there and who was the intended target?“ Assistant Chief Joseph Chacon with the Austin Police Department said. ”We do feel that this was targeted at somebody. We’re still trying to figure out whether that was the individual who died or not.”
Regardless, Chacon said that authorities don’t think there is an ongoing threat to the public.
“Anytime we have a bomb go off like that and somebody dies, the first thing people think is terrorism,“ he said. ”While we cannot completely rule it out at this point, we do not believe that terrorism is a motive in this death.”
People in the neighborhood have expressed concern about opening packages following the explosion.
Chacon said that if people aren’t expecting a package and get one, they are welcome to call the police department.
“Having said that, I do not believe that we have someone going around leaving packages like this,” Chacon said.
Anyone with information is urged to call the police.
Anyone who knew House is being encouraged to come forward, especially if they have information about anyone who would have wanted to harm him.
Neighbors described House as a former president of their Homeowner’s Association. One said he was “a good guy.”
