Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett was arrested and charged for driving under the influence late on Friday.

In a statement released Saturday morning through his office, Hargett said that he was stopped by the Tullahoma Police Department after leading the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Coffee County on Friday night, and was arrested for DUI.

“Driving Under the Influence is a serious matter, and I regret the circumstances that led to my arrest. I respect law enforcement and will trust the legal process as we move forward,” he said.

Hargett, 53, was booked into the Coffee County Jail in the early hours on Saturday, and released a few hours later after posting $2,000 bail, reported WKRN-TV.

He is expected to appear in court on July 14, according to the outlet.

Hargett has served as the secretary of state for Tennessee since 2009 after being elected by the Tennessee General Assembly, and then reelected in 2013, 2017, and 2021. The Republican official has also previously served as a state House lawmaker from 1996 to 2006.

The Bonnaroo Music Festival started on June 16 and is set to conclude on June 21. The event in Manchester, Tennessee, has been held annually since 2002, but it was canceled in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, and canceled again in 2021 because of severe weather.
