A Tennessee mother has been arrested after police said she helped her child assault a classmate at a school bus stop.

Kalina Gaines, 30, was taken into custody on Monday, Sept. 23 following an altercation in which the Nashville mom allegedly egged on her daughter to attack another girl, before taking an active part in the beating.

According to an arrest affidavit cited by The Tennessean, Gaines and her daughter approached the victim at a bus stop at around 8:30 a.m. and took turns assaulting her. The report cited an incident last Friday that had allegedly taken place between the two juveniles as a motive.

A video filmed by students reportedly shows the victim on the ground while Gaines holds the terrified girl down as her daughter hits her “dozens of times.”

Police cited by WZTV said the video shows both Gaines and her daughter attack the victim repeatedly. The victim told investigators Gaines hit her with her hands and kicked her in the face.
Footage released by WSMV purporting to show the attack also depicts an unidentified male standing by during the assault. As what appears to be Gaines and her daughter leave the scene of the attack and get into a nearby car, the man also gets into the car with them.

Gaines faces charges of criminal assault. She has bonded out of jail on a $7,500 bond.

Her hearing has been scheduled for next month, Fox reported.

Bully Chokes Middle Schooler, Causing Permanent Brain Damage, Lawsuit Alleges

The incident follows the case of a middle school student in California who was left with severe brain and spine injuries after another student allegedly choked him.

The incident involved a 12-year-old victim and a 14-year-old student. The 14-year-old allegedly shoved the other student against a wall in a stranglehold at the Animo Westside Charter Middle School in Los Angeles, according to a lawsuit filing cited in reports.

“The violent choking attack caused significant permanent neurological and physical injury and emotional terror to a completely vulnerable child who was betrayed by the school entrusted to protect him,” the lawsuit said, reported the New York Daily News.
Video footage of the incident was obtained by TMZ, showing the older boy grabbing the smaller student by the backpack. Other students are seen standing around the melee.

A school worker appears in the video and looks to see the incident unfolding. However, when the larger boy moves away, she apparently did nothing.

“As plaintiff grasped for his last breath, defendant staff member Doe 1 callously walks away without offering any aid or assistance. Plaintiff was then left to drift in and out of consciousness and suffer from seizures for a significant amount of time,” the 19-page lawsuit said.

According to the Daily News, citing the suit, the larger boy pulls up the smaller boy and walks him to a water fountain. The victim is said to have suffered a seizure and was foaming at the mouth.

The complaint said that he was passed out after being carried by a staffer and placed on the floor. Paramedics were called 20 minutes later, the suit alleged.

The boy is suing the school for negligence.
