Last weekend’s record-breaking flooding in and around Nashville killed 23 people, according to the state emergency management agency. In the area, 42 counties have been declared official disaster areas, and $4 million in federal money is already approved for individual flood victims, said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano during a visit to the state. Nashville city officials estimated that the floods caused more than $1 billion worth of damage. Throughout the Southeast, at least 32 people have died as a result of the storms.
