A 7-year-old boy was shot in the head by another child in a parked car in Tennessee, police said.

According to WBIR-10 TV, Crossville Police on Monday evening confirmed that the boy has died. He was treated at a Knoxville-area hospital.

Police say the shooting was accidental. One of the boy’s siblings fired the gun, the report said.

Four children were left in a car while their mother and stepfather went inside a business to pay a bill.

The shooting was reported just before 3 p.m. ET, reported the Knoxville News Sentinel.

One of the children found a pistol in their mother’s purse, which was left in the car. A child apparently tried to remove the magazine and it fired, striking a sibling.

Neither child’s name was released.

The Cumberland County District Attorney General’s Office as well as the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services are investigating.

Crossville Police have described the incident as a “tragic accidental shooting,” WBIR-TV reported.

No other details were released.

Crossville is located in Cumberland County about 30 miles from Knoxville. It has a population of more than 11,000 people.
