A teenager was among the three people dead in a shooting in rural Georgia near the border with Florida, officials said.

The deceased were identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation as Caleb Logan Butts, 15; Kimberly Gayle Butts, 39; and Jan Elizabeth Kirkland, 64, in the town of Saint George.

All three died from gunshot wounds.

“The preliminary investigation indicates that the incident is a double homicide/suicide but will be confirmed by the medical examiner,” the bureau stated on Oct. 30, the day the shootings occurred.

Autopsies were scheduled for Oct. 31 at the bureau’s crime lab in Savannah.

It’s not clear who officials believe committed the murders before turning the gun on themselves.

Kirkland was the mother of Kimberly and grandmother of Caleb.

‘Dad Found Them’

Kimberly’s father and Kirkland’s ex-husband, who has not been identified, found the bodies, investigators told Action News Jax.
Neighbor Judy Spradley told First Coast News that her husband, a local preacher, knows the family well.

“I’m so sorry this had to happen, but we are praying for them, said Spradley. ”He tried to come up here and pray with the dad but he was too upset because you know he found them like that. The dad found them.”

The bureau told the broadcaster that relatives of the family live on the same street.

Charlton County, where the shootings occurred, is right at the Georgia-Florida border and includes eastern portions of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The rural area had a population of approximately 12,715 as of 2017.
