Taylor Swift Online Prank Takes Odd Turn Involving Selena Gomez, Jonas Brothers
The Taylor Swift online prank involving Charles Z, an apparent 39-year-old fan of the pop singer, has taken an even stranger twist, after users on 4chan registered him into other fan contests to meet Selena Gomez and the Jonas Brothers.
In the Swift contest, the imageboard 4chan.org as well as users on Reddit.com upvoted Charles Z amid throngs of young girls on Boston’s Kiss 108. The station said last week that “disappointingly, we have determined that the integrity of the ‘Taylor Swift’s Biggest Fan’ contest has been compromised,” and it disqualified Charles.
However, following the move, other users apparently used Charles Z’s name on New York’s Z100 radio contest to figure out “Who is Selena Gomez’s Biggest Fan?” according to the Daily Dot and accounts posted on Reddit. The contest would have allowed him to meet her on the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series.
“Im a 39 year old guy(but I act much younger if that counts) whose dreams have been recently crushed. It is truly my dream to meet Selena,” reads an excerpt from the account by Charles Z from the Chilonzor District, which appears to be in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The Gomez contest recently ended, without Charles Z winning.
However, according to Charles Z’s Twitter account, it appears that he didn’t register for the Gomez contest.
“I just Googled Selena Gomez. She seems nice and all, but @taylorswift13 is the Animal House poster on the wall in the dorm room of my heart,” he wrote Tuesday.
According to a screenshot of Reddit’s 4chan section, 4chan’s /b/ entered Charles Z into the Gomez contest “without his knowing or permission,” and he gets to third place before the competition closes down. Users on the imageboard also apparently found the first place winner of the contest, named Kristian, and ripped “him to shreds,” without elaborating. Kristian apparently had to delete his Twitter account due to spamming.
Soon after, 4chan apparently got Charles Z into a contest involving the Jonas Brothers, but it appears it was not his choice either.
“@mona_tone A. I have no idea how I got in that contest B. One of them dated @taylorswift13, so he’s dead to me. C. FINE,” he wrote. He was referring to Joe Jonas, who was involved with Swift. “I don’t know what a Jonas brother even is. @taylorswift13 on the other hand is an ice cream cake made of heartbreak anthems sunshine,” he also wrote.
In the original Taylor Swift contest, Charles Z was described by a 4chan user as a “creepy 39-year-old [who] would like to crush all those little girls’ dreams.”
But on Twitter, Charles Z said he wouldn’t exactly call himself that. “You say ‘creepy’ I say ‘weirdly handsome,'” he wrote.
The recent contest wasn’t the first time that 4chan and Taylor Swift tangled with one another.
Last year, 4chan took over another of her contests, upvoting the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing as the best place for her to perform. The contest was called off but Swift donated $10,000 to the school.
