Melissa Harris-Perry, an MSNBC reporter, wore tampon earrings on the air in an attempt to protest against the Texas abortion law that was recently passed. The move drew condemnation on Twitter.
“My producer Lorena made for me last week some tampon earrings because of course you’re remember that the Texas state legislature said that you couldn’t bring tampons in when they were going these women to in fact stand up for their own reproductive rights,” she said on the air, as transcribed by Newsbusters.
She added: “You weren’t allowed initially to bring tampons. So, just in case that ever happens again ladies, you can just bring them on your earrings.”
Last week, protesters demonstrated in front of the Texas Capitol amid lawmakers’ deliberations about legislation restricting abortion. Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed the abortion bill into law Thursday.
Perry’s fashion choice drew condemnation on Twitter, with some saying they would boycott her TV appearances.
“@MHarrisPerry Your tampon earrings are disgusting and apaulling.. and for that I refuse to watch you ever again,” wrote user J Haff.
Ghengis Kellz wrote: “Ish like tampon earrings is whyyyy I CANNOT. Just make your point the extra drama is not needed!”
“You really are a moronic freak, aren’t you???” wrote another user at Harris-Perry’s Twitter account.
