Killer bees, or Africanized honey bees, have apparently killed a pit bull and injured another dog in St. Petersburg, Flordia, located near Tampa Bay, according to reports.
The bees swarmed the two dogs when they wandered into a yard that had a nest, reported Tampabay.com.
Tampa officials said the dogs’ barking alarmed the bees, which then attacked the two animals.
The wounded dog was taken to a veterinary hospital.
An exterminator told Fox Tampa that as many as 80,000 bees were in the attack of the home where the dogs were.
“We have positioned officers around the house as a precaution to keep pedestrian activity to a minimum around the residence until the extermination is completed,” reads a statement from the St. Petersburg Police Department.
Neighbors told WTSP that the house is filled with junk.
“The overgrowth and all that stuff… and they always says there’s nothing they can do,” said Virginia Gomez, a neighbor.
The station reported that the other injured pit bull is fighting for its life.
