Mohammad Omar, the leader of the Taliban, has reportedly disappeared, said Afghanistan’s intelligence agency on Monday, adding that it is currently conducting an investigation into the matter.

Media reports said Omar was shot and killed while he was being snuck inside Pakistan.

“We can confirm he’s been disappeared from his hideout,” Afghanistan intelligence spokesperson Lutfullah Mashal told The Associated Press.

However, the Taliban have strongly denied that Omar was killed.

“Claims and rumors were spread this morning by the Kabul stooge regime’s intelligence directorate, other officials and some media outlets that the esteemed Amir ul-Mumineen was martyred in Pakistan,” reads a statement from the Taliban, referring to Omar’s Islamic title, and reported in The Washington Post.

Omar, who lost his right eye while fighting against the Soviet invasion of the country, has remained a fugitive for the past decade.

Over the past several days, Omar “disappeared from his location” near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, Mashal told the Post. He added that he believed that Omar moved to North Waziristain in Pakistan two days ago but was not heard from since.
