David Opheim (top L) of the All Saints Church Community Centre; John Stephenson Jr., manager of the Take This Bread bakery (bottom L); and participants of the socially conscious initiative wear aprons presented by Rev. Opheim at the bakery’s official opening ceremony held at the St. James Cathedral Parish House in downtown Toronto on Sept. 28. The initiative was introduced by Stephenson Jr., who wanted to create a business affiliated with the All Saints community that would help provide the marginalized residents of the nearby Dan Harrison Community Complex with an opportunity to work and something to look forward to every day. The participants are free to enter the 12-month program to earn a food handler’s certificate that qualifies them to work at a bakery or kitchen. “It gives you a sense of being,” said John Szimedli, one of the participants.
