State Organs: Transplant Abuse in China

TAIPEI—An organization committed to exposing the practice of forced organ harvesting is teaming up with doctors in Taiwan, as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) begins its 18th Party Congress.

Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting (DAFOH), based in Washington, D.C., has joined efforts with the Taiwanese physician organization International Care Association of Organ Transplants (Organ Care) to address the medical community’s concern about the CCP’s crimes of organ-harvesting.

In a joint declaration, the two organizations are demanding that the CCP stop harvesting organs from Falun Gong practitioners and prisoners of conscience, prosecute those responsible for organ harvesting, end the 13-yearlong persecution against Falun Gong practitioners, and appeal to all countries and parliaments to amend laws or create legislation to protect and prevent local people from contributing to organ harvesting.

The doctors and medical staff who signed the declaration have allowed DAFOH to submit the original copy of the statement, photocopies, and statistics to the United Nations Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization, International Medical Transplantation Association, governments of all countries or parliaments, as well as other organizations that have the credibility and ability to help stop the atrocities.

During the two-week period from Oct. 20 to Nov. 4, more than 475 doctors and 190 medical staff have endorsed the Organ Care-initiated campaign with their signatures. They include the Health Bureau director, chairman of the Physician’s Association and the retired Health Bureau deputy director.

Chen Yongxing, a hospital director and signatory of the statement, disclosed that some Taiwanese doctors have links or business partnerships with organ-harvesting doctors in China. He hopes the Department of Health and judicial units can conduct an in-depth investigation to stop these illegal practices.

Zhu Wanqi, spokeswoman for the Falun Gong Human Rights Lawyer Group, who helped initiate the Signed Declaration campaign, said the CCP’s flagrant depravity of harvesting organs from Falun Gong practitioners and prisoners of conscience has been repeatedly condemned internationally. She said Taiwanese physicians who have sent patients to mainland China for an organ of unknown origin should be subject to the rule of law and strongly condemned.

According to Organ Care, the Signed Declaration campaign will continue until the CCP stops organ harvesting and punishes the perpetrators.

Editor’s Note: When Chongqing’s former top cop, Wang Lijun, fled for his life to the U.S. Consulate in Chengdu on Feb. 6, he set in motion a political storm that has not subsided. The battle behind the scenes turns on what stance officials take toward the persecution of Falun Gong. The faction with bloody hands—the officials former CCP head Jiang Zemin promoted in order to carry out the persecution—is seeking to avoid accountability for their crimes and to continue the campaign. Other officials are refusing to participate in the persecution any longer. Events present a clear choice to the officials and citizens of China, as well as people around the world: either support or oppose the persecution of Falun Gong. History will record the choice each person makes.
