Tacloban City in the Philippine province of Leyte was lashed by Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda, on Friday morning local time.

UPDATE on Sunday: A report says that communications were cut throughout most of the city and as many as 53 people were killed in Tacloban and outlying areas. Military officials said their communications lines were cut.

Citing a government official, the Reuters news agency reported that at least 100 people were killed.

The news agency also reported that nearly all the homes in Tacloban were destroyed.

CNN reported that bodies were lying in the streets of Tacloban.

Videos uploaded to Instagram and YouTube show winds tearing through alleys and causing damage to buildings.

There appeared to be heavy storm surge from the typhoon that flooded streets.

“It looks like a river now. Road of downtown Tacloban City,” one user wrote on Twitter

On Twitter, a number of people expressed worry for family members in the city.

“I called home early this morning in Tacloban and winds was blowing and my family was so scared,” wrote one.

According to Rappler, around 1,000 families were evacuated in Tacloban City.
