PITTSBURGH—The sights and sounds of ancient China were in full display in Pittsburgh, as Shen Yun Performing Arts delighted theatergoers at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday.
The classical Chinese dance used throughout the performance impressed Carol Kamin, a board member of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. “I am enjoying the performance tonight,” said Kamin, who also serves on the boards for the Opera Theater of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
Each dance includes a digital backdrop that shows scenery such as Chinese landscapes, forests, and snow-capped mountains, according to Shen Yun’s website. But Shen Yun’s backdrop is unique in that it is filled with movement, allowing the dancers to interact with it.
“I’m very impressed with the background of what [Shen Yun is] doing. I love how the dancers are going into the screen. It’s beautiful,” Ms. Kamin said.
Along with dancers and the backdrop, each performance is accompanied by an orchestra that joins Western classical music with Chinese instruments, which take the lead.
“I think it’s fabulous. Very exciting. Very interesting,” Ms. Kamin said in reference to the orchestra.
Classical Chinese dance, which is the foundation the dancers use, is considered one of the most comprehensive styles in the world, according to the company’s website. The program also features folk dances, including from the Tibetan and Mongolian ethnicities.
Ms. Kamin “loved the dancers” and was impressed with “all the work that has been put into the total program. It’s wonderful.”
