The New South Wales Parliament House in Sydney, Australia is on lockdown on Friday and a bomb squad has responded.

Part of Macquarie Street is blocked off between St James Road and Bent Street in both directions.

NSW Treasurer Mike Baird said in a tweet that he is locked inside, along with Premier Barry O'Farrell.

The Daily and Sunday Telegraph reporter Yoni Bashan wrote on Twitter: “Sources say a man packed the car with explosives, parked outside parliament and remains inside the car.”

“There is a bomb in this white car outside parliament,” he said, tweeting a picture.

“Police officer speaking to the driver at the window of his car,” he added. “Much speculation as to whether he actually is armed.”

Police sources told Sarah Gerathy, a reporter with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, that the man has threatened to set himself on fire.

“Fire extinguishers now being bought closer to the man in car who has sparked massive security operation outside State Parliament,” she said.
