The Swedish king today informed the Swedish prime minister that Crown Princess Victoria has been engaged to Daniel Westling.
At today’s cabinet meeting at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, the Swedish king announced the engagement. The cabinet meeting was attended also by Queen Silvia and Crown Princess Victoria, which is very rare, reported Swedish radio.
Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt gave his approval to the engagement, which is now official. At 12:00 noon the government said yes. At 2 p.m. the news was announced officially by the Royal Court.
“The prime minister is delighted. They are finally engaged. During this dark and gloomy time in the world love and warmth is spreading in Sweden,” said Reinfeld at his office at Rosenbad today at 2.30 pm.
When Daniel Westling the young man from the small town of Ockelbo marries the Crown Princess Victoria, he will receive the title, His Royal Highness Prince Daniel, duke of Västergötland.
They will be married during in early summer 2010.

“This is a great event for our family and a special day for us and Sweden,” said the Swedish king.
“We will receive Daniel with open arms to our family,” said Queen Silvia.
“I know that a confidence is not given if it is not earned, and I will do my best to earn the confidence of the Swedish people,” said Daniel Westling in the press release.
“Now we can get ready to build our own family,” said Crown Princess Victoria.
It has been a long way to the engagement. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden cannot marry just anyone, because she will one day become head of state, therefore the government has to give its approval.
The couple met when Daniel Westling was a personal coach at a gym that he is the owner of. Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel has been together since 2002 and there has long been speculation about the “man of the people” who came from a small town and found his sweetheart from the Drottningholm Palace.
