Michigan prosecutors charged a man, suspected of randomly shooting nearly two-dozen vehicles along Interstate 96, with terrorism and assault with attempt to murder.
“These were acts of domestic terrorism against Michigan citizens and we are charging them as such,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, according to Reuters.
Raulie Casteel, 43, the so-called “I-96 shooter” suspect, could face life in prison if convicted.
Schuette’s spokeswoman, Joy Yearout, told the Detroit Press that Casteel “terrified motorists from Lansing to Detroit.”
“People altered their routes, mothers told their children not to go to school,” she said, adding, “The circumstances of the case don’t merit anything less than a terrorism charge.”
Casteel allegedly carried out around 21 shooting attacks in mid-October.
According to the Detroit News, family members have previously said that Casteel suffers from mental illness. Judges from two Michigan counties said that Casteel must undergo testing to determine if he can stand trial.
