Four provisions of the Affordable Care Act were upheld by the United States Supreme Court Thursday morning in Washington, D.C. The judges voted 5-4.

The court upheld the provision that Congress could expand Medicaid coverage to millions of persons without health insurance.

The individual mandate, which will require the majority of Americans to have health insurance by law, was upheld. Those choosing to not follow the law must pay a tax on their 2015 tax return.

The provision requiring insurance companies to cover preexisting conditions was also upheld.

The provision giving no life time limit to coverage was upheld.

Children will be allowed to stay on their parents insurance until age 26, which is already a law, was upheld by the court.

Chief Justice John Roberts was the swing vote, joining the liberal justices in the decision.
