SUNY Orange Music Competition Accepting Applicants

Musicians who attend high school in Orange County or students of SUNY Orange can now apply to audition for the SUNY Orange Community Orchestra’s 15th annual Concerto/Aria Competition. The competition organizers will select from among successful applicants who will perform a solo during the orchestra’s annual winter concert on Feb. 26, 2017. The competition is open to both vocalists and instrumentalists. The concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Middletown’s historic Paramount Theatre. the show date for the concert is March 5.

Students can request applications from their schools’ music programs, or by contacting SUNY Orange’s Arts and Communication Department at 845-341-4787 or by sending an email to [email protected]. The application deadline is Dec. 9.

Auditions are set for Jan. 14 at SUNY Orange’s Orange Hall Theatre, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m, snow date Jan. 21. A panel of music faculty from SUNY Orange along with professional musicians from the Hudson Valley will judge.

Instrumentalists should prepare a single movement of a concerto or multiple movements. Vocalists can sing an aria or multiple arias. Audition material should take 10-20 minutes total. Music should be from the 1850s or before, as long as it has a published, available orchestral accompaniment. Music pieces composed after the 1850s will only be accepted with prior approval. Applicants need to bring their own accompanists.
